Island Peak Climbing Trip Overview

Island Peak, which is also known as ‘Ijma Tse’, is one of the most remarkable peaks in the eastern Himalayan region of Nepal. Combining high altitude trekking with a 6,189(20,305ft) summit climb. Which seems like an island in the sea of snow, is an extension of the south ridge of Lhotse Shar. Due to this exceptional beauty, thrilling semi-technical slopes, and remarkable views from the top of the island, peak climbing is one of the most exhilarating prospects in the Mountain region.

This 19-day trip combines the eye-catching view of Mt.Everest, which is the highest peak in the world. Apart from Mount Everest, this trek gives the sight of Lhotse and Makalu, which are towering mountain ranges. The route leads to the Khumba Glacier, highlighting the powerful and ever-changing landscape of the Himalayas. It also introduces the vibrating Tibetan culture.

Major Highlights of Island Peak Climbing

  • Enjoy a 360-degree panorama of 8,000-meter mountains, including Everest (8,848.86m),Makalu(8,485m) and Cho Oyu(8,201m)
  • Pass through famous Sherpa villages like Namche Bazar and Tengboche Monastery, offering rich cultural immersion.
  • Walk within the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Island Peak: A Sea of Ice

Island Peak(Imja Tse) is a mountain in Sagarmatha National Park in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. The peak was named Island Peak in 1953 by members of the British Mount Everest expedition because it appears as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. The peak is actually an extension of the ridge coming down off the south end of Lhotse Shar.

Due to its exceptional beauty, thrilling semi-technical slopes, and the island peak climbing is one of the most exhilarating prospects in the Everest region. It is widely popular among the trekking peaks in Nepal. Island Peak actually shares a great history with the biggest leap that mankind made in the mountaineering world. This trekking peak was used as a practice ground by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay for the oxygen apparatus before they successfully scaled Mount Everest on 29th May 1953.

Why choose Island Peak?

Island Peak is the top choice for climbers seeking an introduction to high-altitude mountaineering. Standing at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet), it offers the perfect balance of technical challenge and achievability for those without extensive mountaineering experience. The climb is exciting yet manageable, requiring basic ice climbing and rock scrambling skills that can be developed during the expedition itself.

The trek to Island Peak also allows you to experience the rich local cultures of the Khumbu region. The route passes through vibrant Sherpa villages, where climbers can visit ancient monasteries, interact with locals, and learn about their fascinating traditions and spiritual practices. You’ll trek through scenic rhododendron forests and stay in family-run teahouses where you can share meals and stories with the people who call these mountains home.

What truly sets Island Peak apart is how it combines personal achievement with cultural enrichment. The summit push itself is thrilling. When combined with the warmth of Sherpa hospitality and the opportunity to understand a unique way of life, Island Peak becomes more than just a climb. It’s a complete adventure that challenges your body, opens your mind, and creates lasting memories and meaningful connections to both the mountains and their people.

Headwall: Island Peak’s Technical Crux

The 100-meter section of steep ice and rock at about 5,800 meters represents the climbing difficulty of the entire expedition. Fixed ropes are usually in place during the main climbing seasons, but you’ll still need mastery of the ice axe. Once you top out on the headwall, the summit ridge offers a completely different challenge; the pyramid requires careful route-finding through mixed rock and ice terrain.

Accommodation Options

There are three options that you can choose from. The most common mode of accommodation is a teahouse. This is the common resting establishment on the trail. However, if you are looking for a more luxurious mode, then there are lodging facilities. These lodgings provide amenities to ensure a comfortable experience during the mountain journey. The third option is camping, where you will set up camps outside to relish the experience as a true adventurer.

Physical Fitness and Training Requirements

The Island Peak climbing involves extensive trekking, steep climbs, and technical climbing gear at high altitudes. Cardiovascular training is essential to enhance aerobic capacity and optimise oxygen supply to your working muscles. The training should be performed 4-5 sessions per week, with each session lasting 30-40 minutes of sustained aerobic activity such as running, cycling, or swimming. Additionally, incorporate strength training to build leg endurance and core stability through regular hiking on varied terrain, particularly uphill climbs with a weighted backpack (10-15 kg). Include exercises targeting your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves, as these muscle groups bear the greatest burden during steep ascents and descents.

Altitude training is equally important to get your body accustomed to working in high-altitude, low-oxygen environments. If possible, spend time at moderate elevations in the weeks before your expedition to allow your body to begin producing additional red blood cells. Technical skill preparation is also valuable for success on the mountain. If you have access to climbing walls or indoor climbing gyms, practice basic ice climbing techniques and rock scrambling movements. A comprehensive training program spanning 8-10 weeks before departure, combined with this technical preparation, will significantly enhance your confidence and performance on Island Peak.

Island peak Climbing

FAQ

Island peak also(Ijma Tse) is one of the most remarkable treks in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal, combining thrilling semi-technical slopes with a 6,189(20,305ft) summit climb.

Island Peak stands out for its unique combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and semi-technical slopes. The peak is different from trek because of its incredible view of Everest and its unique features, including the Sea of Ice. The trek passes through a rhododendron forest, which makes it even more special.

The best time to do these climbing activities is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), as autumn offers stable weather, clear skies, and outstanding mountain views. These things make the climb enjoyable.

Island Peak is considered a moderate trek, making it easier for beginners to climb. The trekking required 3-4 days of physical training in a week of 30-40. The height of the Island Peak summit is 6,189(20,305ft). There is a risk of altitude sickness; altitude training is required to make the climb easier.

Yes, an Island Peak climb is beginner-friendly with physical training to make it easier. However, hiring an experienced and expert guide is advised.

The altitude of an Island Peak is  6,189(20,305ft), which is the highest level of altitude reached in an Island Peak.

Two main permits are required for an Island Peak climb. The permits are the Island Peak Climbing (NMA), the Sagarmatha National Park Entry permit, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhambu Rural Municipality Entrance permit.

Island Peak is not that dangerous, but it can be if taken lightly. One of the main risks of an Island Peak is altitude sickness; altitude sickness can literally kill someone

Food on the Island Peak route is simple but satisfying and nutritious. Dal Bhat is the most popular and nutritious meal available during the trek, which helps to gain energy and protein. Apart from this, other food options like momos, pasta, noodles and bread are also available during the route.

Wifi and mobile network during an Island Peak climb are limited and vary based on the locations. Wifi is available in the tea house, though it is often slow. Mobile network works best in Namche Bazar and Lukla, but disappears around Tengboche and higher up.

Wonderful winter Manaslu circuit  Trek

Great experience with this company. Although it was winter time and the cold and closing tea houses along the way made it slightly harder, we had an unforgettable experience on the Manaslu trek. Still, I would recommend going a little earlier than the 29th of December. Due to the closing of tea houses, the hike over the Larke Pass will be longer which could be a problem for some hikers. Ram was very quick at responding on all our questions and made a good and really flexible itinerary for us.
Our guide Raju and his brother are lovely and made our trip wonderful. They were very helpful and experienced, took care of everything and even cooked for us sometimes. They know a lot about the Manaslu region and their knowledge really enhances the experience. Highly recommend them if you are thinking about doing the Manaslu circuit trek  . Source Tripadvisor

We did the Everest Base case trip and the three passes. Ram was always taking care of us and he managed to get everything we needed as soon as possible. We had many discrepancies from the original plan due to illnesses and he was always open to making the needed changes and flexibilize it. We couldn’t choose the best company for our trip.
Moreover, our guide, Raju, was also a five-star guide: always open to our demands, well known every hotel, place and hike.Very happy with them, Source Tripadvisor

I recently completed the Annapurna Base Camp trek and couldn’t say enough about my experience. The experience itself was amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our lead guide, Ram, was extraordinary!! The trekking wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t that hard, and the spectacular views around each corner meant I hardly thought about the walking. OK, we had perfect weather, which helped; it even snowed while we were at Annapurna Base Camp.

He is extremely knowledgeable of the region and the various villages and places we stayed and provided a top-notch service to myself and my team. Next porter kamal was also simply amazing. Even though our Porter was lots of fun even though he spoke little English, he still communicated, and was loads of fun. Usually, when I write reviews I give some constructive feedback but I honestly wouldn’t change a thing, it was wonderful. I recommend Well Plan Trekking and this experience but I plan on coming back to Everest Base camp Trek.

Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

This was my 3rd time to Nepal for trekking. I was surfing the internet and I came across Well Plan trekking company. We exchange a few emails with Mr. Ram and my friend and I decided to hire Well Plan trekking for our Trekking. Mr. Ram explained to me in detail the programs and the trekking information. I appreciate what this company did for us. Mr. Ram and the porter Vicky Boy which we nickname him and the other porter Ram were so helpful and guided us throughout our 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trekking. Our guide Mr. Ram guided us and followed us throughout our journey. The itinerary was well plan and was informed to us.

A well-planned duty from the 1st day to the last day. I was the slowest person and Mr. Ram the guide was with me and guided me to complete the trekking. He encouraged me a lot as I was on my way to giving up during the early morning journey to ABC because of the thin air and coldness. But with his encouragement, I finally completed my journey.

Kudos to Well Plan trekking company and to Mr. Ram the Guide, Vicky Boy & the smaller Ram the porters. The porter did a great job too. All 3 of them were humble, friendly, and helpful too.

Well done guys. I felt a sense of accomplishment. ABS trekking was the best I ever did. Tough but I finished it.

Once again, i extend my sincere thanks to Well Plan Trekking. The price was reasonable and cheap compared to another agency which quoted us a much higher price.

Thanks and all the best to Well Plan trekking in the future.

Bye

Everest Base camp trek is unforgettable experience and adventure of a lifetime. My and my husband we went for two weeks trek with our guide Sanjay  .This trip wouldn’t be so great without Sanjay . He took care of us and our health. We felt safe and supported for all of the time. When I had a bad day he checked oxygen level in my blood and assured me that everything is fine. He was also checking regularly if we drink enough water which is very important when you are at the high altitude. We are planning another trek and will definitely be going with Well plan Trekking and insisting on Sanjay as our guide!

Well Plan Trekking the Himalaya was an incredible experience before I even stepped foot in Nepal. Ram  was able to reschedule my  Annapurna Base Camp Trek trip due to a family function, and there was nearly no lag time in email response and confirmation. The cultural exposure and guide within the World Heritage sights throughout Kathmandu Valley was exceptional in the days up to the trek. While I was planning to trek in a group, I ended up being the only one (single female) with guide sanjaya . I felt safe with them the entire time; respectful and incredibly accommodating with my short bout of altitude sickness. Yam’s knowledge of the region is unparalleled. I am so grateful to have had him as my guide Sanjaya.  This organization is one I will readily support again in future trips to Nepal, both for their hospitality, giving back to the community and nation, and unrivaled experience of Nepali Himals and culture.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Well Plan Trekking arranged an amazing trip to Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The trek itself was so beautiful and so challenging. Our guide Ram and assistant guide, Kamal was amazing. They worked tirelessly on the trail, at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and after hours to make sure each of us had what we needed for a successful trek. Ram monitored our oxygen and heart rates as we climbed in elevation and he helped to manage other symptoms that travelers had including gastrointestinal issues, headaches from altitude, and cold symptoms. He made sure we stayed hydrated and ate appropriate meals for optimum energy. Ram is much more than a ‘guide.’ He and Kamal paced the group but were also willing to go at the pace needed by the slowest trekkers on any given day. I thank Well Plan Trekking and the whole team very much and can highly recommend Well Plan Trekking for all kind of trekking in the amazing Himalaya.
